Europe know their new kings and queen of badminton

Current nº 1 Viktor Axelsen and current champion Rajiv Ouseph faced each other at the final. However, Axelsen proved to be the King of the court and overwhelmed his rival with a superior game 21-8 21-7. However, there were long rallies with very precise shots proving why both are two of the best players in the world.

Viktor reported that he has felt fine in the court after his injury, testing himself with the Thomas Cup on his head. He confirmed that his rival could have been a Little bit tired as he’s just come from the Commonwealth. Although this is his second gold medal in an European Championships, he felt it like it were the first time.   

Local hero Carolina Marín wanted to revalidate her title for the fourth time in a row against Evgeniya Kosetskaya. They have never clashed before. Marín made history succeeding in an arena full of relatives, Friends and the people of her town, who clapped and cheered. However, Carolina started with some doubts, making some unprecise points and reached the interval only 11-7. Little by Little, she showed all the magic and strength she characterized for and gained confidence, closing the first set 21-15. In the second set Carolina explained why she’s World Champion and current European champion, settling the match 21-7. This is undoubtedly her championship.

Carolina stated that it has been her best match of the tournament. He remember the pieces of advice from her coach Fernando Rivas, trying to make her enjoy the day and all the way until this point. She emphasized her good feeling in the court, also her confidence. She wanted to thank all the people that has come to the arena these days, and she added that now she’s focused on August World Championships.   

Stoeva sisters, Gabriela and Stefani, from Bulgaria, settled their continental title in two sets against French Emilie Lefel and Anne Tran (sixth seeds). The French team have reached for the first time to a European Championship’s final and also have won their first European medal, but they could do nothing against the Bulgarians. French made some coordination mistakes, while the new champions work perfectly together. With a wonderful and defensive game style, the Stoeva sisters resisted the offensive of the French. Then, as they have been doing during the whole championship, they turned to an offensive style, with Gabriela near the net and Stefani at the end. The French only could make some points by moving both Stoevas to the same side of the court in order to be able to smash to the other. Stoevas could step to the highest position quite easily 21-12 21-10.

They’ve declared that it has been amazing to win this gold medal, the first one for Bulgaria. “It felt a little bit disappointed because Christinna and Kamilla, we want to play against them but also the French girls make us a lot of pression and we know that we had to play at 100% against them”. They also hope that this title will give badminton more popularity in Bulgary.

Men’s double ended earlier than expected. Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding found the hopes broken, as they had to withdraw due to an injury after the first set (21-15).

Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen believe that they deserved their victory, as they have played at a really high level. However, they had fortune that one of their rivals was injured and wished him a quick recovery. Until that moment, they had their game plan always in mind.

Chris and Gabrielle Adcock (England) and Danes Mathias Christiansen and Christinna Pedersen clashed in mixed double’s final. The Adcock made it to the final for the second time in a row and give the crowd the most exciting match of the day. The first and second set were really even for both teams, one for the English (21-18) but the Danish put more pressure to the game in the following one (17-21). The final set started with the Danes head 11-6 and everything looked fine for them. However, the Adcocks starred a new comeback with a more powerful game and precise shots near the net. The English achieved in their aim to become back-to-back champions, showing a good relationship between them and also with the crowd.

Mixed couple declared that it has been a dream back-to-back championship. They’re proud of their game. Despite some tense key points because of her rival’s high pressure, they fought hard. They also wanted to thank the crowd in the Arena and praise Carolina’s effort to give more popularity to badminton.
