High world level in the first phase of the main draw of the Barcelona Spain Masters

The Vall D'Hebron Olympic Sports Centre held the second day of the Barcelona Spain Masters HSBC Badminton World Tour with the first round of singles and doubles for men and women. From ten in the morning to seven in the afternoon the first matches have been carried out with the first round of the main draw of the competition. In all of them it has been proved that the Barcelona Spain Masters 2018 hosts the best rackets of the world badminton.

In men's singles, almost all the top-seeded players of the tournament advance in their competition. The player of Israel, Misha ZILBERMAN [7] ditched his pass to the next round against a combative Subhankar DEY (India) in one of the most intense and long-lasting matches (over an hour) of the day, with a final score of 22-20, 16-21 and 21-19. On the contrary, the Spanish Pablo Abian, seed number 6 of the tournament, yielded at the Indian Ajay JAYARAM in a match to three sets (15-21, 21-17 and 21-8).

The Finnish players Henri AARNIO and Kalle KOLJONEN made also a remarkable performance, winning their respective individual games against Kim BRUUN (Denmark) and Felix BURESTEDT (Sweden).

The local player Luís Enrique Peñalver, who jumped into the main draw as promoted from the qualifying round, beat Raul MUST in a three-set match: 21-9, 18-21 and 21-16. The Spaniard needed a third sleeve to beat the Estonian player in this first time they match on the track.

The players from the qualifying rounds Rasmus MESSERSCHMIDT (Denmark) who beat Alexander ROOVERS (Germany) continue on their way to the next phase; and Riichi TAKESHITA (Japan) who beat Karan Rajan RAJARAJAN (India).

In women's singles, it is worth mentioning the performance of the Japanese player Minatsu MITANI who managed to overcome the number 4 seed of the competition, the Thai Pornpawee CHOCHUWONG [4]. Mitani surprised after her 21-14 and 23-21 victory.

The Spanish players Sara Peñalver and Clara Azurmendi had a positive debut in the tournament. Peñalver won her match against Lauren LAM (United States) by 18-21, 23-21 and 21-17. Her teammate Azurmendi managed to beat her rival Marion LE TURDU (France) by closing the match in the third set by 18-21, 21-13 and 21-12.

The Russian player Natalia PERMINOVA hindered the number 3 seed, the Danish Mia BLICHFELDT, her pass to the next round after forcing a third set. Finally, BLICHFELDT won by 19-21, 21-7 and 21-15.

One of the longest matches of the day was played by QI Xuefei and Anura PRABHUDESAI. The Chinese Xuefei beat India Prabhudesai three sets (21-15, 20-22 and 21-16) in a match of one hour and 11 minutes.

One of the most expected moments of the day was the return to the tracks in mens doubles of Lee Yong Dae after his retirement from international competition. Lee was a gold medalist at Beijing 2008 and bronze at London 2012, and reappears at the Barcelona Spain Masters with a victory along with his partner KIM Gi Jung after beating the Dutch Jelle MAAS and Robin TABELING.

In women's doubles the French Sharone BAUER and Marion LE TURDU won the Americans Emily KAN and Isabel ZHONG in one of the most contested games of the day. Bauer and Le Turdu finished the match with a result of 21-17, 20-22 and 21-15 in their favor.

The day of Thursday, August 30, will start at 11.00 with mixed doubles, a modality that has had a break today.
