World and Olympic champions shine at Barcelona Spain Masters 2018

Barcelona Spain Masters has concluded after six intense days at the Vall D'Hebron Olympic Sports Centre. The best international top class players have met in this first edition, which has counted with the participation of 237 athletes, including various Olympic and world champions players.

Danish Rasmus GEMKE, seeded number 2, has won the Barcelona Spain Masters 2018 Men singles against Thai and seeded of the competition Suppanyu AVIHINGSANON in one of the most physical matches lived during the finals. Although the player from Thailand started as a favorite, and so made it clear in the first set (21-15), starting the game with a forceful attack and without forced errors, GEMKE achieved the last two rounds. GEMKE was recomposed in the second, achieving positive partial thanks to chaining several points in a row and unmarked with a decisive 21-6. The third set was equal at all times, until GEMKE who forced a little more the physical condition of the opponent and distanced himself in the last few points (21-14). GEMKE and AVIHINGSANON are currently top 30 players in the world ranking.

Japanese Minatsu MITANI won the golden medal of Barcelona Spain Masters women singles final after beating Danish, bronze medal in the European Championship (Huelva 2018), Mia BLICHFELDT [3] by 9-21, 23-21 and 21-8. The final started with a very offensive BLICHFELDT looking for the backhand zone and forcing the Asian player to the back of the court. The second set was aimed for the Danish player, but MITANI managed to save the set point and match against (20-18) with long rallies to be ahead, by 23-21. The third set was for MITANI with ease, who managed to maintain distance on the scoreboard (14-3) until the end of the match: 21-8. MITANI is currently the top 30 in the world ranking and won the bronze medal at the Copenhagen World Cup in 2014.

KIM Gi Jung - LEE Yong Dae (Korea) have been winners in men doubles after defeating the Thais Bodin ISARA - Maneepong JONGJIT: 21-13 and 21-17. The expected return of LEE Yong Dae after its withdrawal from international competition in 2016, which has been a spectacle of auctions and defenses on both sides, has been one of the most interesting matches of the day. Barcelona Spain Masters was the first high level tournament for the LEE - KIM couple, although LEE Yong Dae is already a true badminton legend: gold at Beijing 2008 and bronze at London 2012, as well as several times world championships finalist and semifinalist.

Current world champions in Nanjín 2018 and seeds of the competition, Mayu MATSUMOTO - Wakana NAGAHARA (Japan), have been proclaimed winners of the tournament in women doubles after beating their team-mates and seed number 2, Ayako SAKURAMOTO - Yukiko TAKAHATA by two sets (21-17 and 21 -13). The winners of the tournament have had good control of the wheel throughout the match and have managed to be final in the attack and its continuation in the net. MATSUMOTO - NAGAHARA have given a single set in this competition, showing their superiority in this tournament at all times.

Danish couple Niclas NOHR - Sara THYGESEN [4] have been proclaimed champions of mixed doubles after beating in two sets (21-19 and 21-17) English couple Marcus ELLIS - Lauren SMITH [1]. I was the only final of the tournament where both couples were European. During the whole match, the scoreboard has reflected the equality of both duos, who insisted on taking the rival player to the back of the court. Despite having an advantage of 19-14 for the English couple, Denmark won the tie at 19 and the subsequent return to the scoreboard, to end the set in their favor. NOHR - THYGESEN closed the match without needing a third set with a superior attack to ELLIS - SMITH. NOHR-THYGESEN were gold medal in the European games in Baku 2015.

Barcelona Spain Masters' next edition will take place in February 2019, where the best rackets of the world badminton will meet again.
